Preservation

This is where the “preservation” part of my blog title comes in.

The internet is unceasingly interesting because you can find virtually anything that you want on it. It is like exploring the woods when you were a kid, only so much more. You turn here, you look there, and you always find something new. Except, in the woods you more often than not explored the unknown. Of course the internet encourages that, but with the added bonus of rediscovering things that you have either forgotten about, or in this case, been actively trying to remember for the rest of your life. I stumble across things i’ve either lost or forgotten about all the time.

for instance:

Dr. Marten’s Music Sampler

Tracklist:

Kowalski ~ Primal Scream
Last Cup Of Sorrow ~ Faith No More
Pitiful ~ Failure
Quark ~ BT
Why? ~ GusGus
Fun For Me ~ Moloko
Soft Serve ~ Soul Coughing
Candyman ~ Cornershop
Let Me Clear My Throat ~ DJ Kool
Rip Stop ~ T.D.F.
House Of Fire ~ Arkarna
Peppermint ~ Drill Team
In Your Car ~ Kenickie
I Got You (At The End Of The Century) ~ Wilco
Don’t Wanna Be Here ~ Cool For August
0For1 ~ Poster Children
90′ Fuzzwalk ~ Rockers Hi-Fi

This particular sampler cd was a staple in my CD collection, circa summer 1997. If I heard it now, I would immediately be transported emotionally to the summer before my freshman year in high school. I spent a week in El Campo with my grandmother, I spent a week in Katy with my aunt, and I spent the rest of the summer on the roof of my friend Justin’s house talking and looking for U.F.O.s. (No drugs were involved. Just two friends that got really, realllly into the X-Files.)

The highlighted tracks are music that I love now, but probably skipped over then (considering I don’t remember them on this particular sampler). Crazy how perspective changes things. How many more lost sampler cd’s like this are there in my life? or yours?

(Is that album cover dated or what? )

Narrow Stairs/Muxtape

There is a great website called muxtape.com. I’ve found that this is one of the best ways on the internet to get new music suggestions. The whole thing is really quite simple. Registering is easy and you get to upload 12 songs to share with the world. The homepage has other people’s tapes, so it’s really fun to browse and listen.

oh yeah, listening! if you have a computer with speakers and a mouse, that’s all you need. just click a track and it will stream.

So in the spirit of promotion I have chosen to illustrate the efficiency of muxtape.com while simultaneously promoting the upcoming Death Cab For Cutie album, Narrow Stairs. The album is 11 tracks long and I needed a 12th, so I decided to include their cover of the Smith’s “This Charming Man”.

I hope to hear some of your muxtapes soon. You can look forward to (dread?) more of mine periodically in this blog.

“I’m an importer/exporter”

Wow. fiddling around on wordpress and I seem to have imported my (brief) stint at blogger. Now there is absolutely no reason to stick around there.

Enjoy!

Sitting down and continuing the conversation…

Hello everyone! Most of you have likely found my link at blogger. Why the move? I simply like wordpress better. Look for improvements to this blog constantly as I try new things out. Thanks for your patience. There will be no immediate difference in posts, but it is my eventual goal to narrow the scope of this blog down to only a few subjects. That will come later, though.

In the meantime…

Check out codybess.com. Great portraits, including a few of my sister. Click on “work” and she is currently at the top of the thumbnail list.

I’ve had the pleasure of living with Cody for about two or so years, and I can guarantee that his photography is the real deal (not that I am one to judge, but still). Give him a shot for your next wedding, bar mitzvah, band photo shoot or three year-old birthday party!

Ciao!

Breakfast:

-diced bellpeppers
-diced onions
-diced garlic

it spread on like relish, and it was quite good.

Dinner:

exactly what i had for lunch, except with two shiner bocks. c’est bon!

Today, i had 0 meat cravings. Pretty interesting so far…

Vampire Weekend

I know I’m quite a few months behind the rest of the blogosphere on this one, but I’ll be willing to bet that some of you are too. (Marc, I’m looking at you.)

Vampire Weekend, the blog band of late 2007.

So I’m driving to work today, and it is one of those beautiful, warm springtime days. I have my windows down, and the neighborhood I am driving in contains many, many rosebushes which are quite fragrant.

I pop in VW, and everything seems exactly right. Am I in a wonderful mood because of the album, or the weather, or both? who knows. I have decided one thing, though. If this band is polarizing, that’s okay. If you are of a romantic mind like me, pop this album in today and I am quite sure you will enjoy it.

I really cannot get enough of the first four tracks lately. I’ve posted them for you to enjoy. Play them. Even if you, like me, have been enjoying this album for a little while now. This is really happy music.

Progress Report, Day #1: Vegetarian Week ‘08

Last Night’s Dinner:
My Grandma (affectionately “Granny”) had already prepared a plate of leftovers from lunch that I could not in good conscience ignore.
-roast beef
-chicken
-okra
-turnips
-baked beans
-rice/gravy

Not a vegetarian meal, but still better than fast food. And it satisfied a final meat craving before VW ‘08 really kicked off..

This morning’s Breakfast:
Woke up around 7:30 am, hungry as hell.
-coffee
-banana
-cheerios
-whole grain waffle
-orange juice

Breakfast really is key to an energetic day. I suggest you all take note. It works wonders!

Lunch:

I was a little worried I’d give in for lunch. We have plenty of heatable ribs, hamburgers, etc. in our freezer. Luckily, I found a bag of Lenticchie (Sicilian Lentil Soup) in my pantry.
This contains:
-lentil Beans
-wheat pasta
-semolina (gratefully not “dripping from a dead dog’s eye”, as mr. lennon would have it)
-onions
-carrots
-tomatoes
-garlic
-celery
-parsley
-and of course, fennel

all enjoyed with a glass of water and two slices of whole wheat bread.

This soup makes 8 servings, so I am sure I will revisit it during this whole harrowing ordeal.

Dinner:
Things are really getting questionable here, people. I was running a little behind for work, so i had no choice but to stop by Subway. Now, I know Subway isn’t really fast food, but that doesn’t justify what i got:
-12 inch veggie on honey oat bread
-lettuce
-tomato
-bellpepper
-olive
-onion
-banana pepper
-salt/pepper
-oil/vinegar
-mustard/mayo

I should have gone 6 inch and I should have ignored the condiments, but whatever. I was preempting a hunger while sitting in my lifeguard chair. (If you are asking how I can post from a lifegaurd chair, the answer is of course telepathy.)

I can see myself getting hungry during the day, but no problem. I plan on drinking plenty of water and will never be without a package of raisins, nuts, fruit or some other sort of healthy snack. I’ll keep you guys updated.
